Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs)

Billions of tons of magnetized plasma hurled from the Sun's corona. They take roughly 1–3 days to arrive, giving forecasters time to issue watches. When one hits Earth's magnetic field, it induces currents in long conductors — power lines, pipelines — that can overload transformers.

EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse)

A high-altitude nuclear detonation produces three pulses: E1 (nanoseconds — fries semiconductors), E2 (lightning-like), and E3 (minutes-long, transformer-damaging). Solar storms only produce the E3-like effect; an EMP produces all three.

Most G5 storms will not catastrophically damage the grid — but Carrington-class events sit at the far end of G5, and studies put the odds of one at roughly 1–12% per decade. Ice-core records suggest Carrington-intensity storms recur roughly every 500 years, and the radiocarbon record shows even larger Miyake-class events striking every 1,000–3,000 years.
